Mommy vs. Andrew: ROUND ONE

ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE????

Yesterday marked a turning point for little Andrew. I made a change that turned his little world upside down. Nothing will ever be the same again. His milk must be cold.

What?, you say?

Yes, my boy still drinks 3 cups of milk a day...warm. In my attempt to switch him from formula to milk, I decided to warm the milk to make it more similar to the formula. That worked well. Except now he won't TOUCH milk if it is cold out of the fridge. He takes one sip, pushes the sippy to my and says "warm it up".

I decided that it wasn't worth the effort to break him of this. Why not warm it up? We're talking a 20 second task. No big deal. I know eventually he would switch to cold...peer pressure should get pretty heavy eventually.

But then two things happened. 1) Andrew decided to take it up a notch. "Too cold Mommy. Warm it up" Then a few seconds later "No Mommy, now too hot. Blow on it". Ummmmm, what do I look like, a short-order cook? Okay, so I am for Andrew, but this is going too far! 2) It's getting embarrassing and inconvenient. Monday we went to McD's with playgroup. They were out of juice boxes for the happy meals. Would I like milk? Oh no, my son can't drink cold milk like the rest of the free world.

So Tuesday afternoon was my starting point. We had a music class Tuesday morning, so I didn't want to piss him off before that, so Tuesday afternoon.

Oh the fits!

Oh the tears!

Oh the pushing books off book shelves!

Oh the whining!

Oh the holding the cup but not drinking because we're just so sad!

Well, I thought I was really in pickle. He wouldn't drink (about 1/2 cup in 24 hours of total liquid) because all I'd give him is cold milk to drink. But I can't give in now!!! He would just learn that whining and throwing fits gets you what you want.

So tonight he was playing with Jeff and it came bedtime. Jeff said "Do you want to watch Elmo and drink milk?" Andrew said, "No, watch Elmo and drink WARM milk". Little stinker. He whined as I poured cold milk into a sippy, but then he drank the whole big cup easily in front of the TV. Could it possibly have been this quick and easy? Is he smart enough to know thirst is more pressing than a power struggle?

So it seems: ROUND ONE---Mommy is victorious!
